Market Report May 2009

|
VEGETABLES Savoy cabbage are in short supply and subsequently very pricey. This is caused by a premature end to the English season before the Spanish has had time to kick in. A temporary recommended alternative is fulsome sweetheart or spring cabbage Both purple sprouting broccoli and curly kale are passed their best and are best avoided. Globe artichokes are at their peak and taste superb. English asparagus is plentiful but dearer than Perivian or Spanish. However, the superior flavour more that compensates for the extra cost. The price of tomatoes of all varieties is still high, but our suppliers anticipate a graded fall in the next week or two. BERRIES Redcurrants are still expensive. English strawberries have started but they are expensive at the moment and won't be at their best for a few weeks yet. PRICE WATCH Watermelons are very expensive but are available. Be aware that their season has only just begun so they will be on the small side. Honeydews are scarce and expensive. As the fruit and veg scene changes often, please keep checking our website as we pass on WEEKLY updates on what's hot and what's not to help our customers plan their menus.
